Burda 01/2016 #101
I have been sewing for a while but had yet to tackle sewing activewear. Here is my pattern review for Burdastyle 01/2016 #101.
Yoga entered my life last year when I decided that I needed some form of exercise. I settled on yoga. It fit my schedule and I was able to attend classes. I hadn’t invested in any activewear for it but that has changed because I love yoga. I mean like really love it in a “Where have you been all my life? You complete me” kind of way.
Lucky for me the Burda January 2016 issue had a swathe of yoga wear patterns. One of the things I love about Burda magazines is the range of pattern you get including activewear! Since being moved to the Ashtanga Improvers class I decided to sew activewear in honour of leveling up.
Pattern Details
Burda1/2016 #101A is an oversized top that appealed to me because it looked so comfortable. The design is slightly longer in the back than the front and it features a kangaroo pocket. The sleeve are drafted as 3/4 sleeves with an exaggerated hem. There is some gathering at the neckline.
Fabric Selection
I used a piece of leftover viscose jersey fabric from when I made my first Moneta. I bought it from a closing down sale shop. Since I sewed with this fabric before I know that it washes well. I still wear that Moneta dress so I know this will last.
Sewing Construction
Time wise It took me 30 mins to trace and cut the pattern. Additionally, just 20 mins to cut the fabric. Another 45 mins to whip it up. I made sure to use ball point needles (a lesson learnt the hard way!). All seams were overlocked and simple zigzag stitch for hemming.
Sewing Activewear Techniques
Gathering knit fabric
There is a small section on the front neckline that is gathered using gathering stitches. I followed the instruction to sew 2 basting lines and gather to the required length.
Hemming for knit fabrics
The curved hemline had to be stitched using a stretch stitch. In my case, I used a zig zag stitch setting on my Husqvarna Viking H Class sewing machine with a width of 2.5 and length of 3.
Based on the sewing techniques I’d rate this an easy pattern and highly recommend for beginners dipping their toes into sewing activewear.
Verdict
To sum up, it does the job really well. I start my yoga practice wearing it and I can easily slip it off. For warm down at the end, I easily pull it back on. Plus it has the front pocket – I love putting my hands in the pocket all the time. I will definitely be making another of the variation that has a hem band.
I am pleased as punch. Next up I need to make yoga pants. Have you made any active wear recently? I have been looking at the Sewaholic range but am still undecided……..

February 21, 2016 11:49 pmI love this – perfect for throwing on over anything, not just for yoga! I have vague plans to sew active-wear but haven’t quite organised myself to work out the best fabric for it! Lots of people seem to like Jalie for leggings though?

February 22, 2016 12:20 amA great top, love the fabric too! I tend to just buy cheap activity wear from the supermarket, but fehr trade has patterns for activity wear too.

February 22, 2016 8:30 amThanks Ruth! Just checked out Fehr Trade and they have some interesting leggings.

February 22, 2016 1:57 amHila, that looks so great on you, and perfect for your class! Looks like more than the average scrap fabric I’d have left after making a dress, though. Have vague plans for more active wear, but nothing specific. sigh!

February 22, 2016 8:32 amThank you. I had bought 3m of the fabric but its 60″ wide so a lot was left over.

February 22, 2016 2:58 amLove it! I bet you’ll wear it loads not just for yoga but casual with jeans too. The fabric looks different when it was a moneta 😀

February 22, 2016 11:04 pmLooks super comfy. I thought those Burda patterns were a nightmare to trace – you must have a knack with it!

February 23, 2016 7:07 pmLol they normally are a nightmare but this one had fewer pattern pieces than normal😃.

February 22, 2016 11:15 pmLooks great, and such a cheerful print. Hav activewear on my to-sew list this year. Have the patterns ready (Seamworks has a whole range of yoga-suitable items), but it’s the fabric that’s proving more tricky…

February 23, 2016 7:04 pmThanks Teresa! Out of curiosity how much is a Seamworks subscription?

February 23, 2016 8:20 pmOff the top of my head, I think it’s around £6/£7 a month…. But will check and get back to you. Bit of a lottery what patterns you get but as a new member I think you can download two past patterns or recent ones a month (therefore omitting any you don’t like) which sounds like a better way of doing things. I really like what they do: simple, quick, every day projects 🙂

February 25, 2016 6:02 pmFabulous! This looks like a great activewear piece. I haven’t wandered down that road yet, But I spend enough time in spandex that I really should take a chance on making my own gym clothes.

February 25, 2016 11:04 pmThank you! Making activewear is satisfying😃
Linda of Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!
February 27, 2016 5:32 pmI love your fabric choices. Just lovely. I have a McCalls pattern for active wear but haven’t tried it yet. I am definitely in need though!
