In this post I review the book: Metric Pattern Cutting for Children’s Wear and Babywear by Winifred Aldrich

I have always been interested in pattern drafting for kids. Being a mother of 5 and loving sewing as much as I do, it was only a matter of time before I ventured into self drafted kids pyjama bottoms!

Fabric Selection

I used a lightweight cotton fabric that is so cute I fell for it as soon as I saw it. The black background with multicoloured VW beetles was an instant hit with the kids. When sewing for kids you need them to be into the fabric otherwise all that sewing effort will be for nothing!

I have a preference for easy care and easy wear fabrics when it comes to kids sewing. So, when I prewashed and tumble dried this fabric which turned out to require minimal ironing to look good I was very happy.

Pattern Drafting for Kids

I drafted the pattern block for my son using a book called Metric Pattern Cutting for Children’s Wear and Babywear by Winifred Aldridge.

The book is useful and thorough. Incredibly detailed it explains sizing issues with kids sewing. It contains many designs and fundamentals to set you up for more advanced designs if you wish to do so. I can see why it still remains the standard textbook for pattern drafting after all these years.

The sizing was good.

It was interesting and fun. Will definitely be drafting more patterns.

It was easy to make. Used an elastic waistband. The length was spot on and it has good crotch space. My son declared it ‘ comfortable’.

I highly recommend this book as a great addition to any dressmaker or seamstress who wants to have the flexibility of drafting patterns yourself.
