My Favourite Books of 2019
From bestsellers to hidden gems, I have rounded up the best books of 2019 that I have read so far. Get ready to add to your reading lists for 2020. Here are 7 of my favourites from this year. The books are a mix of audiobooks and Kindle books.
This year I have more audiobooks compared to last year’s list. I find the audiobook experience a superior one depending on the narrator. So far my favourite narrators have been Perdita Weeks (Circe) and Stephen Fry (Mythos). Without further ado:
1 – Mythos by Stephen Fry
Take a voyage to the very beginnings of existence according to the Greek legends and follow the adventures of the Elementals, then the Titan and the Olympian gods. A thoroughly fun listen especially read by Stephen Fry (I could listen to the telephone directory being read by Fry – he really has a knack for it). I listened on Audible.
2 – The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow
I was so moved by this tale of a young seamstress and the interwoven mental health issues that I wrote a review post. A great fiction read that has sewing elements in it.
3 – The Murmur of Bees by Sofia Segovia
This is a hauntingly good book that features elements of magical realism from writer Sofia Segovia. It takes a while to get going but when it does you are good for the finesse with which she builds the atmosphere.
4 – Circe by Madeline Miller
Madeline Miller did an extraordinary thing of bringing to full life a character that was only mostly known for having been seduced by Odysseus while on his way back to Penelope. This is another book on Greek legend read by the impeccable Perdita Weeks. I listened on Audible.
5 – The Courage to be Disliked by Ichiro Toshimi and Fumitake Koga
Adlerian psychology is introduced in the form of Socratic dialogues between a master and a student. A heavy book that can take a while to process but has some very interesting perspective on life.
6 . Gut – The story of the most underrated organ in the body by Giulia Enders
Did you know there is a thing called a gut brain? Well, Guilia Enders certainly knows a lot about our most underrated organ and she makes it her mission to share what she knows. A quirky fun book filled with scientific explanation and quirky doodle.
7 – The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F… by Sarah Knight
Learn about how to budget your mental time, space and energy and this meta book about life. Dressed up in expletives Knights book delivers the message of the stoics aptly for a modern era – what you think about amplifies so learn to focus on things you want more of in life.
BONUS – Honourable Mention – The Book You wish Your Parents Had Read when you were a kid by Philippa K Perry
Brutally honest and doesn’t coddle your parental ego. Do not touch if easily offended by the idea that you might not the good parent you thought were. I listened on Audible.
And that’s my best books of 2019 list!
Thanks for reading! What were your favourites for the year? I’m looking to add to my reading list for 2020.

December 24, 2019 10:53 amHi, I watch your vlogs and have contacted you there re Stephen Fry’s book, wonderful. I have also read The Fogotten Seamstress, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My favourite book at the moment is The Time in Between by Maria Duenas. Translated from Spanish about a seamstress in the 1930s and 40s. I think that it has been renamed The Seamstress. It really is a fantastic read.
