This is an updated Kitschy Coo Girls’ Dress sewing pattern review. The full review is after the pictures of the many variations I have sewn of this rather easy kids sewing project.
Kitschy Coo Skater Dress No.4 – Boho print Dress
Made with a cotton jersey that has a lovely bohemian print. I used red cuffing for neckline and cuffs. Fabric was from Fabrics For All in Leeds.
Kitschy Coo Skater Dress No.3 – Pink on pink Summer Dresses
These were sewn in a pink cotton jersey and used a red cuffing for necklines and cuffs. I bought the fabric from Fabrics For All with the girls as they had asked for pink dresses. This fabric has done so well as they are still going strong a year later.
Kitschy Coo Skater Dress No.2 – Christmas Dress
Sewing for kids is so much fun since it requires less fabric and time. This is so important during the Christmas period when time is limited. So when it came to sewing Christmas dresses for my twins – I decided that the skater dress was the way forward.

I used a fuschia stretch fabric and emerald green trim purchased from Fabrics For All.
Kitschy Coo Skater Dress No.1
I made some Kitschy Coo Skater dresses for my twins which they loved. Unfortunately, the pink and white dots did not survive very long. The material was not the best. I had made a promise to make a replacement.
Luckily for me, the fabric was already available that she had selected herself when I took them with me to Fabworks. You see, they have developed their own unique tastes and I can no longer get away with picking what I believe will be “cute” for them. I have learnt the painful lesson of lovingly sewing a garment that had a luke warm reception from one and outright rejection from the other. They are very involved in the process now – much less heartbreak on my part.
On their side – they absolutely love the garments sewn with their input. SO much so that getting them to change out of the garments is a challenge.
Kids Sewing Advice
I don’t know why its taken me so long to realise that of course, they love the things they are involved in more. Its the same with food – my kids will eat anything they have had a hand in making or growing at the allotment. In the past, I have indulged them when they happened to be with me while I was fabric shopping or when I made birthday dresses. But now I see an opportunity to do an activity together – wherein I help them to create the visions they have in their heads. I will try to be open to what may otherwise seem like odd combos to me and I am excited to see where that will take us. Should be fun!

Kitchy Coo Skater Dress
The girls’ skater dress is described as funky yet functional knit dress has a fitted bodice, high neckline and a curved flared skirt. With a generous cut, the dress is designed to be worn for up to two years per size, here the skirt hits at the knee in the first year and just above the knee in year two. There are options for a sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve version, with bodice pieces drafted specifically for either sleeved for sleeveless.
Its only available as a PDF on the Kitchy Coo website. The size range is from 18months to 8 years. I traced the size that corresponds to 4 years age (4T) and the fit was spot on. The instructions are easy to follow and well supported with pictures. Just like the Lady Skater dress its also easy to sew up.

November 19, 2018 8:05 amOh such a great neckline! So flat and perfect.. first thing I noticed. I agree with your sentiments re the children’s involvement. My son (now 14) always from a very young age was very committed to what he would or would not wear. He used to only wear collared shirts when he was little and never any branded or super hero etc t-shirts. I always check before I make him anything… funnily the favourite thing I have made him is a pair of Burda shorts with cotton drill with cloud print fabric.

November 19, 2018 8:25 amWhen my eldest daughter was a tot she went through a stage of refusing to wear any sort of trousers, which was unfortunate as we were on holiday at the time with a suitcase full of almost all trousers. I think it was the one and only time she ever had a tantrum and, to this day, neither of us know what got into her head.
I’ve never made the Kid’s Skater Dress but I have made more Lady ones than I can remember- it’s one of my favourite patterns. I re-discovered a blue velvet one in my wardrobe the other day which will be perfect for Christmas.
Your little one chose a pretty fabric and the colour suits her – she obviously has very good taste 😊
