Burda 8/2020 #112 and #103 Pattern Review

Updated 4/5/2021 I am so excited about this post because I actually sewed 2 items from the same issue of Burda to make an outfit! I sewed separates! My natural preference is towards dresses so this feels like a big deal for me. As soon as I got my Burda 8/2020 magazine I was drawn to the wide neck top #103 (which is also the featured sewing pattern in the magazine) and the simple style skirt #112. I have added the video to show you these DIY projects in action at the bottom of the post.

Burda 8/2020 #112 Skirt Pattern Review

Pattern Description: A-line panel skirt with center back zip.

Pattern Sizing – Petite EUR17-21
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? – Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? – Yes. I went the extra mile of hand sewing a bias binding finish on the waistband. I used a hook and eye to fasten the waistband.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? – I like A Line skirts in general and have felt the need for more basic solid colour skirts in my wardrobe.
Fabric Used: Stonewashed linen in black. I LOVE sewing with this fabric. Its a pleasure to press the seam. This is the 3rd garment I have sewn with this fabric and I suspect there will be more. It washes well plus has the benefit of being comfortable to wear. Especially in summer.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I had to take it in on waist buy 1/4″ each side. Linen expands slightly when you are wearing it and I find that with skirts its better to reduce the waist a little bit. By the time your body heat relaxes the fabric, it will fit well. I also skipped the little fancy tabs on the waist band.

Would you sew it again? Yes. Stay tuned for more of these skirts!

Would you recommend it to others? – Yes!

Conclusion – I think this a good pattern to add as a skirt staple. It uses less than 1 meter of fabric. I love the finished garment more than I thought I would when I started on the project.

Burda 8/2020 #103 Top Pattern Review

Pattern Description: Fitted jersey top featuring raglan sleeves and wide neckline.

Pattern Sizing – EUR36-44

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? – Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? – Yes. It was the featured sewing pattern in the magazine which meant everything is laid out for you. It came together quickly once all the prepwork was done. I used my overclocked for all the seams except for the neckline. That required my sewing machine.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? – The thick wide neckline looked appealing.

Fabric Used: Knit jersey with a digital print. 95% cotton 5% elastane. The bright floral colours were a big factor in my decision to get this fabric. I bought 1m and managed to fit the top in that amount.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None.

Would you sew it again? Yes

Would you recommend it to others? – Yes!

Conclusion – The style is like a T-shirt but ‘extra’. I can see myself making more of these!
