Updated 10/02/2022. Todays post is all about that iconic 70s vintage wrap dress from Diane von Furstenberg. I now have made it for the second time in a cotton lawn fabric. The pattern is versatile in that you can use both woven and stretch fabrics to sew it up. My first one was in a viscose jersey. I have wanted to try this pattern for a long time. Lucky for us there is a vintage pattern reproduction company called The Vintage Pattern Shop (thevintagepatternshop.com). They stock and sell thousands of reproduction vintage out-of-print patterns. When you buy, you get a copied version on craft paper that is durable along with printed sheets of instructions. I was quite happy with the service and relieved to be able to get this pattern without the prohibitive eBay cost as I have seen one original pattern go for £300. At The Vintage Pattern Shop, it costs £17. It is a no-brainer for me. If you’d like to see the dress in action please click play on the video review below – I am totally smitten with this pattern.

1976 Vintage VOGUE Sewing Pattern WRAP DRESS Review
Pattern Description – Iconic wrap dress with 2 variations – collars and 2 lengths.
Pattern Sizing – Size/Measurements: 14~ Bust: 36″ ~ Waist: 28″~ Hip: 38” The pattern comes in the one size you buy. I chose based on my bust which measure exactly 34″.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? – Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? – Yes. It comes with a full copied set of instructions (if you are familiar with vintage sewing patterns you won’t be surprised.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? – I love the flowing A-line flare and the extra-long belts.
Fabric Used: For the first one, I used a lovely John Kaldor viscose jersey. Its is an abstract houndstooth print that I thought was perfect for this style. It washes well at 30 degrees and tumble dried on low. The second was sewn with a 100% cotton lawn. I loved the abstract floral print on the navy background. The crispness of the fabric added a lovely airy quality to the finished garment.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I made it sleeveless.
Would you sew it again? Yes
Would you recommend it to others? – Yes! I made one for my sister (post coming soon).
Conclusion – I love how these dresses turned out. This simple classic style can be sewn over and over creating different looks depending on the fabrics used. I love how I feel when I wear it and can see why this is a highly collectible pattern!
