Burda 7/2020 #117 Pattern Review – Here is the second of my planned Burda 9/20 sewing projects. This was a skirt that I knew I had to sew when I saw the preview. The skirt was the Burda tall size pattern in the magazine. I selected the size that corresponds to my hip and waist measurements. I didnt alter the length – I sewed it as is. I like long skirts so I didn’t bother with making that adjustment. For context, I am 168cms tall. The waistband is a draft it yourself pattern piece so you can make it as narrow or as wide as you prefer. I made mine 5/8″ wide as I have a contoured waist and wide waistband roll.

Burda 9/2020 #114 Pattern Review

Pattern Description – Midi flounce skirt with a hem flounce that widens towards the back.

Pattern Sizing – EUR72-88. This is a Burda tall pattern. My size on the Burda tall sizing table is 80 – this is the size I cut at the waist and graded to 84 at hip.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? – Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? – Yes.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? – I like the hi low hem along with the hem flounce.

Fabric Used: Medium weight crepe fabric from John Kaldor. It has a lovely drape while the surface has a soft texture from the ’twill like’ weave. I was attracted to the plum abstract print. My thoughts were that the brush strokes of black and white in a plum background gave me options for styling with solid colour tops. Plus the colour is autumnal. The fabric is completely opaque so I didn’t need to line the skirt. The fabric was gorgeous to sew with – taking a stitch beautifully.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I omitted the lining as the crepe fabric is opaque and a medium weight. The skirt is designed to cut on the bias so it does create a mermaid feel. I would normally add pockets to my fall skirts but being the bias ruled out pockets for me. I did not want to interrupt the side seam.

Would you sew it again? Yes

Would you recommend it to others? – Yes!

Conclusion – The skirt turned out well. It is a style perfect for my fall capsule that I am building. I have worn it here with a Burda 9/2010 rollneck top and McCalls M6044 peplum cardigan.
