Two Deer & Doe Melilot Shirts Review – Tana Lawn and Rayon Challis
Todays post is a Deer & Doe Melilot Shirt pattern review. Its always pleasing when I like a pattern enough to make a second one! I have 2 Melilot shirts to share – one in Liberty Tana lawn and another in Art Gallery Fabrics Rayon. Sewing the Melilot shirt is relatively quick given that it has drop shoulders which makes sleeve insertion easier. Though it comes in a version with long sleeves, I prefer the short sleeve cuffed version.

Deer & Doe Melilot Shirt Pattern Review
Pattern Description
Casual shirt with drop shoulders. Version A: long sleeves and rounded collar; version B: cuffed short sleeves and mandarin collar. I made version B with the cuffed short sleeves.
Pattern Sizing
34 to 46 (printed) – 34 to 52 (PDF). I sewed size 38 based on my measurements on the size guide.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like a cuff sleeve as well as a drop shoulder. The cute rounded collar caught my interest and I love how it looks!
Fabric Used
I used Liberty Tana Lawn “Lodden” in pink for the first one. For the second one, I used Art Gallery Fabrics Rayon in a tropical print. For the Tana Lawn version, I omitted the concealed placket while the AGF rayon has the concealed placket. The second version in rayon was sewed using a Minerva Kit whereby you get all the notions and patterns included. The kit has the appropriate Vilene interfacing, matching thread, buttons, needles, enough fabric to make either view A or B and the paper sewing pattern. I have really enjoyed using the Minerva kits since one of my major issues that stall a project is overthinking notions. I easily get stuck thinking about finding “the perfect buttons” or the “perfect just right interfacing” so having all these ready means I can just get on with the sewing project.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made –
None apart from skipping the breast pocket as I never use that.
Would you sew it again?
Yes!
Would you recommend it to others?
Absolutely!
Conclusion
I hope that you have enjoyed reading my Deer & Doe Melilot Shirt sewing pattern review. I love this shirt pattern as it is a quick easy to sew up project. You can create different looks depending on the fabric you use. It is hard to pick a favourite between the Tana lawn and the AGF rayon as they create different vibes. The cotton lawn gives a lovely crisp shirt feel while the fluid drape of the AGF gives a relaxed off duty look that is still chic. I plan on sewing another one in linen – Melilot would sew beautifully using linen too.

July 27, 2017 9:32 pmI’m not a shirt wearer (or maker) because collars don’t suit me but I do like this neat little one. The fabric is just beautiful. By the way, I know these photos were taken before the haircut but I do love your new short hair – you look so elegant!! X

July 28, 2017 7:42 amThat looks so pretty on you. I like Deer and Doe, although some of their designs are too young for me, plus I get free delivery because they are in France which is always a bonus. Love the jeans too – did you make them? If so, what pattern did you use if you don’t mind me interrogating you 😉

July 31, 2017 10:38 amI was gifted a Deer & Doe pattern in last year’s Stitching Santa, but haven’t found the right fabric for it yet. Whilst this is a lovely shirt, Liberty Tana Lawn would look fabulous even if was made up as a sack!!
