Last week I had an episode of hubris in which I giddily promised to sew some outfits using Ottobre Design Kids sewing magazine in time for our upcoming family camping trip to Normandy. Let it be said now that I shall never allow myself to succumb to hubris again! This past weekend was not only a test of my will and determination as a dressmaker but also my integrity and honour as a parent. I made promises in front of the family and those promises had to be kept.

I am proud to say that I managed it all! Is the finishing perfect? Absolutely not – but I have always believed in “better sewn than perfect“. Are the twins beyond ecstatic with their quirky new outfits? Absolutely! Do the clothes fit them? Absolutely yes! Did I fulfill my promise? Heck YEAH!!!

And that is what matters most to me. Plus I got to use some fabrics that I had been precious about for years 🙂 #win

Ottobre Design Kids Sewing Magazine Review

I have been sewing from Ottobre Kids for over 5 years now. I highly rate this magazine and cant speak its praises highly enough. You can buy single issues or subscriptions directly from the Ottobre Design site. The sizing is true to fit. You have to select the size based on the child measurements. I appreciate this fact since kids grow at different rates. The instructions are always clear and concise allowing even the beginner seamstress to produce good looking garments. The Extreme Sewing Weekend

I traced and sewed 6 garments in total. Since I was making for the twins that meant 3 things sewn twice. The tracing was super quick as to be expected when you are used to tracing adult patterns kids patterns are a piece of cake. The sewing took the longest especially with the summer viscose dresses as I had to re-thread the overlocker. Black overlocked seams on yellow jersey is not a kind thing to do to my kids 🙂

Ottobre Design 3/2020 #27 Dress Review

I sewed this lovely summery dress using viscose/rayon challis in ditsy prints. Both fabrics were sale items from Jack Fabrics in Leeds markets years ago.

Ottobre Design Kids 1/2020 Leggings

The leggings pattern was from Ottobre 1/2020. Its been a while since I have sewn them leggings. I picked this popping yellow jersey when I used to frequent The Shuttle in Shipley. The viscose jersey stretches out more that I realised and get baggy after several hours. A cotton jersey would have been more suited. They still love them though.

Ottobre Design Kids 3/2016 Dress Review

The dress from Ottobre 3/2016 was the final one on the sewing machine. I used a modal jersey that is so soft and comfortable – it was hard to give up the fabric to my kids! They love the flamingo print. They also chose the sleeve fabrics from the scraps box and used AGF ice cream cones and embroidered cotton. It a joy of sewing when you can use scraps like this.
