Today’s post is a review of Megan Nielsen Harper Shorts sewing pattern. I sewed them in a stable ponte fabric. I don’t usually wear shorts as I prefer dresses and skirts to trousers but I was surprised at how much utility I got out of this pair of shorts. Perhaps its because the fabric is a ponte so I get the comfy snugness! Either way here is the review!

Stylish and comfortable shorts or pleated skort. Pattern sits just below the natural waistline, features a modern fit, two lengths and a full lining. Version 1 is a pair of shorts with curved patch pockets. Version 2 is a mid length pleated skort with slash pockets which combines the comfort of shorts with the appearance of a skirt. Skill: 3 5.
Pattern Sizing
Sizing: XS XL (each pattern includes all sizes). Your pattern envelope includes the full size pattern and instruction sheet with detailed instructions to guide you through constructing your garment.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the contoured waistband which adds to the overall comfort of wearing the shorts.
Fabric Used
I used a ponte di roma fabric which has some quilted detail on it. The colours are not my usual bold florals but I was being adventurous. Though I used a ponte – I still treated the sewing as though I was sewing a woven – so I had no alteration to anything. I got the fabric from Leeds Market stall – Jacks Fabrics.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made –
I changed the location of the zip to the side seam from center back. Its a personal preference.
Would you sew it again? Yes
Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Conclusion
This is a fun pair of shorts. I enjoy wearing them in early spring paired with tights to create a youthful vibe especially paired with a stripe top. Have you sewn shorts recently?

April 20, 2024 4:27 amHi i love your version! Did your Ponte have any stretch? I have a stable Ponte, but it did say it had about 20% stretch when I bought the fabric. How did you move the zip to the side? Any specific things to keep in mind with the lining?

August 24, 2024 2:54 pmHi! Yes my ponte has about 10% so quite a stable ponte. Since I used an invisible zipper it was simply a matter of sewing it into the side seam instead. Remember to use a lining fabric with a similar amount of stretch. Good luck!
