Sewing for Children | Ottobre Design Kids 3/2015 Daisy Dresses

I made some summer dresses for my twins. Making them summer dresses seems to have become quite a bit of a tradition. My twin girls had the luck of being born just before I started sewing and as such, they have always grown up with handmade clothes. Since toddlerhood, they have accompanied me to fabric shops, helped me pick out fabrics, and browse haberdashery. When I started sewing for them, I was completely in charge and could make unilateral decisions about the design and fabric, and colours used. But that only lasted for so long – a couple of years to be exact. I have learnt that if I am making clothes for them to wear – they need to be involved in the creation process (Sewing For Kids Advice). They browsed Ottobre Design Kids sewing magazines collection to select the pattern they wanted. The pattern that made the cut was from 3/2015 – the summer issue. It’s a really pretty dress pattern with an origami style pleat at the front. The cap sleeves are adorable. The instructions call for fully lining the dress but I only lined the bodice. The fabric is cotton poplin that sews beautifully. The colours remained vibrant even after prewashing. I finished the dresses in time for them to be worn for a non-uniform day at school. The only alteration to the pattern was to add side seam pockets.

The fabric used has some lovely vintage vibes and oh so lovely to sew with. It comes in 2 other colourways as well but the high contrast print really caught my eye. I prewashed at 30 degrees and tumbled dried on low. The project itself took only one seating as it comes together very quickly.
