Sewing books?
There are technical sewing books and novels that have a sewing component. I like technical sewing books but I also love and find inspiration in sewing books i.e. fiction that involves sewing. I am sharing a recent fiction sewing read.
I recently read The Forgotten Seamstress when it came up on my Kindle storefront purely because of its link to my sewing craft. In all honesty, I would have never considered this book 6 years ago – which is the time before I started sewing!
I have read some fiction books with characters that sew and have found that most of them tend to be boring with sewing details that seem just a little bit off. However, this wasn’t the case with The Forgotten Seamstress. It was unputdownable.
I finished The Forgotten Seamstress – I
Mental health
Another reason I liked this book is that it also touches on mental health issues – though if you are quite sensitive about the treatment women in eras gone by then perhaps you may want to skip this. I read it through my Kindle unlimited which I can access on my Kindle e-reader and my phone with seamless pick up from where I left off on either device. I read a lot between sets and reps in the gym during my resistance training.
I absolutely loved the historical details that Trenow worked into the fabric of this story and it challenged me to think what sewing really means to me.
Future reading
Liz Trenow has another book called The Dressmaker of Draper’s Lane that I have added to my reading queue and will get to it soon.
Have you read any of Liz Trenow’s books?

April 12, 2019 5:41 pmI saw Liz Trenow speaking last month at an Essex Book Festival event. She is a member of a silk weaving family going back 300 years, so prob knows about fabric and sewing. Family business was originally in Spitalfields, London and now in Sudbury, Suffolk. She was a very interesting speaker and talked about her research for The Silk Weaver etc. I’ve had Forgotten Seamstress on my kindle for a while – I shall now prioritize it, thanks to your review!
